Today (Wed), is National Housing Day, as a reminder of the issue of homelessness in our cities and towns and to bring awareness that Canada is still the only G-7 country without a national housing strategy. The City of Saskatoon, Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation and the Saskatoon Housing Initiatives Partnership is hosting a conference to talk about homeless services initiatives, what’s working and what’s not. The guest speaker is Jesse Thistle, originally from Prince Albert, who is working on his Doctorate at York University. He works with Metis communities suffering from the effects of inter-generational trauma, mainly from the Batoche area and in Northern Ontario. One of the sessions today covers the successes and challenges for homelessness in Saskatchewan and another touches on developers getting involved in affordable housing.
