The Saskatchewan Public Safety Agency says wildfire activity in 2026 was lower than in recent years.
As of October 19th, a release from the SPSA says there were 358 wildfires this year, below both last year’s total of 520 and the five-year to-date average of 539. About one third of this year’s fires were reported by members of the public.
Over 300,000 hectares of land were burned across the province, most of which occurred in the northern response area. Of the fires this season, the SPSA says 165 wildfires were identified as human-caused, fewer than those caused by lightning.
This June also marked one year since the community of Denare Beach was ravaged by fires which destroyed over 200 homes. The release says, “to date; 58 homes have been rebuilt in the area with nine more expected to be completed this month.”
The SPSA also responded to 47 flooding incidents this year, 30 of which were caused by snow melt. To date, the SPSA’s Provincial Disaster Assistance Program (PDAP) is assisting with 186 disaster designations across the province. This includes flooding, plow winds, heavy rain, tornadoes and more.
