Mating season is kicking off for ungulates around the province.
Acting Executive Director for the Saskatchewan Wildlife Federation Darrell Crabbe says male elk, moose, mule deer, and white-tailed deer will be spending the next few months crisscrossing the province in search of a mate.
Crabbe says because they’re so fixated on their quest, they won’t be paying much attention to the roads, so he is urging the public to be more cautious.
“They have lowered concerns about crossing roads, highways, grid roads, and it’s just that time of year where everyone should be a little more cautious about driving, especially in low light conditions.”
He adds that according to 2025 numbers, Saskatoon, Yorkton, and Prince Albert recorded the highest levels of wildlife collisions across the province.
“The deer populations in Saskatchewan, due to significant winter events over the last three years, and then of course some of the diseases like chronic wasting disease, have reduced those numbers quite a bit, but there’s still heavily populated areas within the province in those zones.”
He says elk kick the process off, followed by moose, mule deer, and white-tailed deer, wrapping the season up at the beginning of December.
