The Federation of Sovereign Indigenous Nations says a court decision shows their inherent and treaty right to hunt, supersedes Provincial and Canadian Law. The decision from the Saskatchewan Court of Appeal concerned a First Nations Hunter, Kristjan Pierone of Manitoba, who shot a bull moose on land owned by Benmoen Farming Company limited. Pierone did not have consent to hunt on the land. But, the FSIN says no signs were posted and it appeared the land hadn’t been cultivated for several years. FSIN Vice Chief Heather Bear says, “This decision affirms that the First Nations have a prior right of access to the wildlife of the province as part of their inherent and Treaty rights.”
