It’s been ten years since the Terry Fox run in Saskatoon last gathered at the Vimy Memorial Bandshell but this year the event returns to what organizers describe as an iconic spot along the South Saskatchewan River.

However, recent social media posts show the bandshell has been marred by graffiti, debris and garbage.

In a statement to Saskatoon Media Group, City of Saskatoon Facilities Manager Shane McKechney says the City is aware of the recent graffiti at the Vimy Memorial Bandshell.

The graffiti removal team was scheduled to be there Wednesday to clean and or paint over the graffiti.

He notes that the Parks Department typically sends a team along the riverbank two or three times per week to remove litter and garbage in this location among others. The team was also scheduled to complete litter pick-ups and empty garbage receptacles yesterday at Vimy Memorial Bandshell.

Recent media reports indicate volunteers have been cleaning downtown benches as well, in an effort to stave off unsightliness while the City contemplates pulling benches in the downtown and installing what is termed aggressive architecture that prevents people from sleeping or lingering on benches. McKechney says damage to benches are added to the workload of the responsible team and are prioritized depending on the severity, safety, and issue reported.

Meanwhile the Terry Fox Run registration is at 11 a.m. with start time at noon on Sunday. The run or walk is a choice of two, five or 10 kilometres. At the beginning of the month the Saskatoon Terry Fox Run had already met its fundraising goal of $55,000 so they raised their goal to $75,000 and as of Thursday September 17th, $84,335 has been raised.
