The lowest temperature reported at an Environment Canada weather station early Saturday morning was plus 3 in Saskatoon and Rosetown.

“There was a good cloud shield that came into the province,” said Kayla Bilous, a meteorologist with Environment Canada. “That’s what kept the temperatures above zero.”

The cloud provides a blanket-like protection to keep surface temperatures a little higher. However, the sky will clear on Saturday night. Bilous says the most likely areas to fall below zero will be the Kindersley and Battlefords regions—with the Saskatoon area possibly in the frost area as well.

Bilous says there may be a mitigating factor. Models show the potential for some fog to developing overnight and that could keep temperatures above the freezing mark. However, she adds that predicting fog too far in advance can be tricky.

The current projection for early Sunday is plus one in Saskatoon. Bilous advised to check the updated weather forecast that will be issued later Saturday afternoon.
