Producers in 197 rural municipalities can use the liquid strychnine under the Emergency Use Registration announced earlier this year by Health Canada’s Pesticides Regulatory Directorate (formerly the Pest Management Regulatory Agency).
Mandatory on-line training is required to use the liquid strychnine.
At this time of year, strychnine application is not recommended due to abundant green vegetation that makes the bait less effective. The next recommended application window is July 15th to September 1st, once vegetation starts to dry down. Additional liquid strychnine supplies are expected throughout the growing season.
The Strychnine Stewardship Program includes measures to protect at-risk species. All strychnine users must also conduct an in-field species-at-risk assessment and document the implementation or risk mitigation measures. Site monitoring is required for a minimum of four weeks following application with once-a-day monitoring in the first week.
