Two RCMP officers from Melville are in hospital with serious injuries after having been shot. They responded to a report of an assault in the community at 9:35 p.m. Sunday and as they arrived, a gun was fired hitting the two officers. The armed individual – believed to be a man – remained in the home.
Officers from Melville Detachment and Saskatchewan RCMP’s Critical Incident Response Team responded immediately. This includes the Emergency Response Team, Police Dog Services and the Crisis Negotiation Team. Officers with the Serious Crimes Unit were also engaged. The Government of Saskatchewan’s Protection and Response Team assisted, along with Regina Police Service’s SWAT officers.
RCMP say a dangerous person alert was not issued as the suspect was contained to a home and officers determined there was no elevated risk to public safety. Around 2:00 a.m. Monday the suspect and another person left the residence and the suspect was arrested. He remains in custody; the second occupant has since been cleared of any involvement.
Saskatchewan RCMP’s Serious Crimes Unit (SCU) has carriage of this ongoing investigation. Charges have not been laid as yet, and the matter is still under investigation.
