Conexus Credit Union is urging the public to be cautious of scams and frauds this holiday season, especially with the company’s upcoming merger.

Chief Risk and Compliance Officer Mark Millham says scammers often act during times of excitement or change. With the January 1st merger between Conexus, Cornerstone, and Synergy coming up, alongside the Christmas holidays, it’s the perfect time for fraudsters to take advantage. He has already received reports from targeted individuals.

“Fraudsters are posing as Conexus or major streaming platform (representatives), and those fraudsters are calling people in Saskatchewan and claiming that their payment has failed, and then they’re asking for their credit card details to resolve the issue.”

If you’re suspicious of a call from a Credit Union representative, Millham says don’t be afraid to hang up and call the main member contact number, as you’re better safe than sorry.

In 2024, there were 51,600 reports processed by the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre, however it’s estimated only 5-10 per cent of frauds are reported. Millham says if you suspect you’ve been the victim of an attempted scam, report the incident to your financial institution or the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre.
