A University of Saskatchewan news release states that with an aging workforce and an increase in population, there is a critical shortage of dental hygienists in Saskatchewan. The Canadian Dental Association’s 2023 survey found that nearly a half-million dental appointments over two months had to be cancelled across Canada, due to staff shortages.
Right now, there is only one certificate program in the province, so USask is introducing a new Bachelor of Science in Dental Hygiene that will admit 18 students annually, beginning this fall. Dean of the College of Dentistry, Dr. Walter Siqueira, says, “The program’s design includes an innovative evening class schedule that will run from 5 pm to 10 pm. This accommodates individuals with full-time commitments, allowing them to pursue education without sacrificing their employment, This approach not only facilitates access to education but also supports students financially, as they can continue working to pay for their tuition-a first-of-its-kind initiative in Canada.”
Prospective students have from this Wednesday until June 1st to submit an application.
