The province has approved measures to keep couples seeking divorces out of court.
Regulations now in effect stipulate they must go through mediation or arbitration and going in front of a judge for a settlement would be a last resort.
The President of Collaborative Professionals of Saskatchewan believes this is the right move.
Kayla DeMars-Krentz who has litigated about 30 divorce cases says sitting down with financial specialists, psychologists and lawyers gives couples more input and choice about their futures while reducing the financial and emotional stress.
She points out this prevents someone who insists on going directly to court from dragging their spouse into a potentially painful experience.
Demars-Krentz says as a lawyer she always advocated out-of-court settlements and feels collaboration reduces acrimony and paves the way to find creative solutions.
