The province is taking the federal government to court over an agreement singed in 2006, that saw both parties agree to divide the cost equally for the clean-up of the Gunnar uranium mine off Lake Athabasca. The province has contributed 125 million dollars to the project, while the feds have only paid a little over $1-million.
Energy and resources minister Bronwyn Eyre describes it as football fields worth of tailings that have to be covered.
That’s 4.4-million tonnes of tailings to be buried and 2.7-million tonnes of waste rock that has to be remediated.
The total cost of the project is estimated at $280 million. When the agreement was signed, the cost was believed to be around $24 million. (CKRM)
