Charmaine Stick won her court case and the appeal, but she is having the same problem again with the Onion Lake Cree Nation.
She and the Canadian Taxpayers Federation fought for transparency, as guided through the First Nations Financial Transparency Act, to see the financials and the salaries and expenses of Chief and Council, and was able to see 2 years worth, but when she recently asked for this year’s documents, Stick was told she would have to go through them at the band office. CTF spokesperson, Todd MacKay, says the documents should be available online for full transparency. He explains that it can be intimidating for band members to read the financials at the office because in many First Nations communities, the Chief and Council control most of the jobs and housing and support payments, so you don’t want to put yourself out there. MacKay say they have talked to their lawyer about launching a new court action.
