Saskatoon City Council will once again re-open the discussion today (mon) about a pay-as-you-throw garbage collection system and a mandatory curbside organics program. The matter was postponed to the October council meeting in September. Some councillors wanted to receive additional information and council agreed to push the matter over. The three main points that council will discuss are the implementation of a green organics bin for single family homes, that residents would be able to choose the size of garbage bin and pay based on the size of bin they chose and that garbage be paid for through a waste utility rather than through property taxes. The reasoning to change the city’s waste collection program is to help extend the life of the landfill and to help with the city’s target of 70 per cent waste diversion by the year 2023. Currently garbage collection is paid through property taxes.
