To quote the seven dwarfs, “Hi-ho, hi-ho, it’s off to work we go”. To quote the punsters, “I owe, I owe, it’s off to work I go”. According to new research from staffing firm Accountemps, most workers in Canada like listening to music when at work and feel they’re more productive at the office when they do. 77% of respondents who are able to do so (some workplaces don’t allow it for reasons known only to the bosses) say they enjoy turning on the tunes while working. More than 3 in 5 professionals say they are at least somewhat more productive when music is playing at the office. 41% said it is allowed where they work, with no restrictions, and another 30% said it’s allowed with some restrictions, such as the requirement to wear headphones. It’s important to keep volume levels low enough to hear the phone or when a co-worker needs to talk to you and don’t sing, tap your feet or hands, or hum along to your favourite songs (even though it’s mighty tempting, isn’t it?). The survey didn’t specifically name local radio as the only source to listen to music while working but obviously we know it is a preferred option for many even though admittedly the music is sometimes interrupted by information.
