The provincial government has created new legal options for people who have become the victims of ‘revenge porn.’ A person whose intimate images have been distributed without their consent will be able to sue the person who distributed the images. That person will have to prove that they had a reasonable basis to conclude that consent had been granted. The victim will be able to choose if the action will be heard in Small Claims Court or the Court of Queen’s Bench. Amendments were made to the Criminal Code in 2015 and the province says, its amendments will allow the victim redress in both criminal and civil courts.
