There will be a new leisure centre in east Saskatoon and the city is looking for input on what amenities you would like to be included. Director of Recreation & Community Development, Andrew Roberts, states that the future leisure centre in the Holmwood sector will be about the same size as the Lakewood Civic Centre, and he expects it will include a pool. He says, “The Holmwood sector when it fully gets developed is going to be home to approximately 70,000 people, so the need for a swimming pool and access to swimming lessons and aquatic-type activities is going to be a need.”
The Centre may also include a gym, fitness workout rooms, meeting rooms, multipurpose spaces and child-minding spaces. This is a joint project which includes a public and Catholic high school to be built in Holmwood. Roberts says, “This is a very exciting project because we are receiving funding from the province and the federal government through their Investing in Canada Infrastructure Program. It is a joint development with funding from other levels of government, which is also very exciting, because it reduces the burden on city taxpayers.”
There is a survey on the city’s website. You can click on the link here. Roberts adds that there will be more public engagement as the project goes on. There is no definitive timeline for when the leisure centre might open, but he estimates it may be in 2028. When it does, it will be about the size of the Lakewood Civic Centre.
