Electric vehicles powered by 100 per cent solar energy are available in Saskatoon as part of a car share program that is the first of its kind in Canada. Renewable Rides is an initiative from the Saskatchewan Environmental Society and its partners. The car share program is the already existing CarShare Co-operative. The Society’s Executive Director, Allyson Brady, says the first electric car was added to the fleet in March and they now have four, with another on the way in a week or so. That means of the seven vehicles available, five will be electric. A car share program helps to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and parking congestion, and helps with accessibility to affordable options for transportation. Adding the electric vehicles takes it that extra step further with more fuel efficiency. Brady says the use of electric vehicles is growing, particularly in countries banning the sale of new gas and diesel cars, such as the Netherlands in 2020, Norway in 2023, India in 2030 and France and Britain in 2040.
