Free, online textbooks have saved thousands of University of Saskatchewan students collectively about $1.18-million since 2014. Provincial funding was provided to the U of S, the University of Regina and Sask Polytechnic to work toward free online textbooks and resources, making post-secondary education more affordable. Patti McDougall, vice-provost of Teaching, Learning and Student Experience at the U of S, estimates about 4,500 students will be using open education resources this year. So far, the Colleges of Commerce, Veterinary Medicine and various Arts and Science classes are using open textbooks, and the resources are growing every year. McDougall says it also helps the instructors, because it gives them the opportunity to develop reading material that fits their classes, as opposed to feeling tied to the content a publisher deems important. Eventually, all first-year courses at the U of S will use open or more affordable reading material.
