The Minster of Finance, along with other Saskatchewan housing, Realtor, and rental corporations, hosted an event to unveil an update on Saskatchewan’s housing statistics.
Starting out with housing starts, 2025 saw the construction of 6,150 new housing starts in Saskatchewan, the highest level in more then a decade. Data from the Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation, Starts and Completions Survey showed 3,083 new housing starts were built in Saskatchewan within the first six months of 2026, with those numbers expected to match or exceed last years numbers.
For new rental units, data shows 6,371 new rental units have been completed between 2023 and 2025, bring Saskatchewan’s total rental stock to 44,802 units in 2025, the highest level on record. Based on current trends, 2026 data is expected to surpass Saskatchewan’s total rental stock record.
Landon Field, CEO of Rental Housing Saskatchewan, says a health vacancy rate is between 5 and 6 per cent, with some areas of the city seeing vacancy rates as low as 2 per cent for a long time.
“When the vacancy rate is super low, you might feel trapped. There’s only one place available and it’s that or nothing. We’re moving into a more healthy market.”
Field adds that a healthy market means a renter is able to pick from more then one option, and take there time when making a decision.
The Government of Saskatchewan has introduced more than $60 million in the 2026-27 budget to help with the construction and affordability of housing. The funds were put toward a range of programs including:

- The Saskatchewan Secondary Suite Incentive Grant Program: Provides a 35 per cent grant for construction costs (up to a maximum $35,000 grant) for building a new permitted rental unit at a homeowner’s primary residence. Applications for this program will be accepted until December 31, 2027.
