Good morning, this is Vanese Ferguson with Coffee Talk. Our news poll question asks whether you have ever signed a petition. It’s running about half and half. The two prominent petitions I know are circling right now include the NDP wanting the government to prohibit the selling of American booze and the other is the union for the WestJet cabin crew as they negotiate their contract. I only signed one petition in my life that I can remember. It had to do with the environment in the context of habitat for species at risk. At least I think that’s what it was. And I could refresh my memory if I could remember my password to get back into my Gmail. The reason I could refresh my memory going that route is because of the unending number of emails I get from the entity which generated the petition. Obviously petitions work. We saw it in Alberta regarding their separation vote. I think petitions can do two things. In the case of the petition, I signed it allowed me to feel a little less helpless in terms of my role in a seemingly impossible-to-change-situation. And then there are petitions which garner a strong voice for a cause with potential for change. I hesitate to sign them because you have to provide a fair bit of info to verify you are real and you are you. Which inevitably leads to being on a mailing list you never asked to be on in the first place. I’m pretty sure that was the motivation for logging out of Gmail knowing I couldn’t remember the password.
