The Province is increasing access to affordable housing in northern Saskatchewan with the construction of 12 new tiny homes.

The homes, which will be located in Buffalo Narrows, La Loche and Cumberland House, are possible thanks to a $1.5 million investment from the governments of Canada and Saskatchewan, and a $1.58 million installment from Metis-Nation Saskatchewan. The rental housing is focused at providing shelter for single Métis citizens with low incomes.

Earlier this week, MN-S also celebrated the grand opening of eight more tiny homes in Bear Creek, Black Point, Turnor Lake, Michel Village and St. George’s Hill.

Wynter Philips is the Acting Housing Manager for Metis-Nation Saskatchewan. She says “every community in the north, if not every community in Saskatchewan, has need for more housing, more affordable housing. So, this definitely addresses a need in all these small communities up north. Certainly, there is more need for new housing, for more repairs, for getting existing housing up to better condition.”

Philips says the decision to build tiny homes comes from a demand for small, single occupant, affordable units.

“All these homes are very energy efficient as well, and so there will l be a very low-cost utility bill month over month for these tenants.”

The new homes are expected to be completed in spring 2027.
