The Ministry of Justice and Attorney General Tim McLeod made an announcement about a $160,000 investment to help the Saskatoon Police Service sustain the Human Trafficking Responder/Liaison program.

The program plays a part in reducing and ending human trafficking by providing coordinated crisis support, advocacy and court navigation for victims and survivors of human trafficking. The roles are also designed to provide education, training and awareness activities to try and advance prevention on the matter. The specialized responders allow human trafficking victims to be connected quickly to support.

Community partners, such as Hope Restored Canada, are welcoming the investment and Executive Director Kendra Mazer said real change happens when organizations work together.

“A coordinated approach to human trafficking must contain three elements. Education and prevention, a strong and compassionate response and long-term survivor support. At Hope Restored Canada we have the privilege of witnessing transformation every day.”

Saskatoon Police Chief Cameron McBride said, “At the Saskatoon Police Service, we have seen the critical advantage that support for victims of human trafficking can have.”

The program places a focus on both public safety and the safety, dignity and long-term well-being of victims as well.

The investment was funded through the National Action Plan to End Gender-Based Violence.
