Following an incident on the South Saskatchewan River in Saskatoon last weekend, the safety boom has been repaired.
At 4:46 p.m. on Sunday, numerous calls identified a jet ski rider in distress near the weir on the river at 33rd Street East and Spadina Crescent. Thirty-two-year-old Adan Vargas Salvador visiting from Mexico has yet to be found.
At the time of his accident, the boom was not in place, as it had been damaged by high water flows. However, the City had warned the public to stay off the water.
The City says because they are experienced river users, the Saskatoon Rowing Club is paid to install and remove the boom each spring and fall. The Club was enlisted to facilitate the repair of the boom on Wednesday morning, and it is now back in place.
As higher-than-usual flow rates continue, the City reminds people to remain off the river. There is signage on the University Bridge warning of the river weir ahead and warning signage is in place at the boat launch.
