A 55 year old Melville man is facing charges in connection to the shooting of two RCMP officers on Sunday.
The investigation by the Saskatchewan RCMP’s Serious Crimes Unit has determined that an altercation occurred between two individuals. One man allegedly threatened and assaulted the other individual. who did not report physical injuries to police. When officers responded to this incident they were shot at and suffered serious injuries. Both officers are in Regina hospital.
RCMP have since recovered a gun from the home in question.
Markus Dodge is charged with 11offences in total including attempted murder, aggravated assault, discharge firearm with intent, pointing a firearm and unlawful possession of a firearm.
In relation to the initial altercation, he is also charged with uttering threats and assault with a weapon.
Markus Dodge is in Yorkton Provincial Court Tuesday morning.
The RCMP says while the two injured officers are in stable condition, their injuries are serious and potentially life-altering in nature.
Chief Supt. Murray Chamberlin, criminal operations officer for the Saskatchewan RCMP, told reporters during a news conference on Monday “it’s obviously been a very challenging week or 10 days in policing across the country, and as I mentioned, a stark reminder of the dangers our members face every day.”
Chamberlin was unable to share whether the officers were able to self-evacuate or had to remain at the scene until other members arrived. Chamberlin said he does not believe the officers returned fire.
