A more structured and independent approach to inmate discipline for serious incidents plus a new partnership with the Saskatchewan Marshals Service (SMS) are two major thrusts of The Correctional Services Amendment Act, 2026, passed Wednesday by the provincial government.
The act is designed to strengthen the province’s correctional system to improve safety, fairness and consistency while providing clearer processes and stronger oversight to manage inmates, while respecting the safety and rights of both inmates and staff. Major disciplinary matters will now be decided by Justices of the Peace. ensuring decision are impartial and consistent. The partnership with the SMS is designed to strengthen how criminal incidents are addressed within correctional facilities with the SMS to investigate offences that occur in provincial custody and lay charges when appropriate. This would ensure that incidents like violence and drug trafficking are dealt with in a timely manner, while allowing municipal police services to focus on frontline community policing.
