Tim Horton’s has selected the Saskatchewan Wheelchair Sports Association to benefit from the 2025 Holiday Smile Cookie Charity. Half of the campaign’s proceeds will be given to the SWSA, while the remaining half will go towards Tim Hortons Foundation Camps.
The Smile Cookie initiative launched on Monday at the Tim Hortons on Miller Avenue and 51st Street with some friendly competition and a cookie decorating contest.
Community Consultant with Wheelchair Sports Kat Zarry says there are over 200 wheelchair athletes in Saskatchewan, ranging in age and ability.
“Our wheelchair basketball, we have about 30 people on our team. We have a rugby team in Regina that has as under ten, but then we’re just starting up a rugby team in Saskatoon in January.”
The organization also has three children’s mini teams with 12-16 kids each, a wheelchair rec night, a bowling team, and a curling team.
She explains that this will be the organization’s largest fundraiser of the year, and years to come.
“We got $35,000 last year, so we’re trying to double this year is our goal, because we have some really high expenses.”
For example, one basketball wheelchair is $7200, and rugby chairs are over $10,000 each. Funds raised will also be used for accessibility upgrades, to ensure every sporting facility, gym, and field has easy-access ramps and washrooms.
As of mid-way through day one, over 10,000 cookies have been sold. You have until November 23 to get your Smile Cookie.
