It was another good week for cattle producers, as prices were up in all the feeder steer and heifer categories that could be obtained. However, only 18,027 head were marketed for the week. The previous week had 34,415 head marketed.
Prices were up for feeder steers ranging from 400-900 pounds last week, as well as feeder heifers between 400 and 700 pounds. The remaining categories, comprised of light weight steers and heifers, 900+ pound steers, and heifers between 700 and over 800 pounds were unavailable due to insufficient data collected between November 22 and 29th.
Canfax shows that 400–500-pound feeder steers showed a price increase of $20.96 per hundredweight. The average animal sold for just over $557.
Meanwhile, 5-6 and 6-7 weights saw roughly the same price increase at about $13 per hundredweight. They’re selling at $480.28 and $433.05, respectively.
Little changed with 800–900-pound feeder steers, with a $2.08 uptick per hundredweight. The average animal sold for $352.33.
Over to the heifer side, both 5-6 and 6-7 weights saw about a $14 increase, bringing their price tags to $421.80 and $385.50 per hundredweight, respectively.
Also, 400–500-pound animals saw a $17.41 price jump, bringing their total to about $476 per hundredweight.
Not great news for slaughter cows: prices of live, non-fed cattle in Alberta were lower than the previous week ending with November 22. D2 slaughter cows sold for an average of $168.75 per hundredweight, a small decrease of $0.14 per hundredweight from the previous week. Meantime, D3 slaughter cows were $2.45 lower per hundredweight from the prior week to average $155.53 per hundredweight
