The City of Saskatoon wants multi-unit residents to participate in a series of engagement activities as part of the city’s, “Saskatoon Talks Trash,” campaign. Brenda Wallace, Director of Environmental and Corporate initiatives says, “Decisions about how we manage waste will impact all current and future residents so it is important we get this right.”
Wallace adds a big a part of the discussion will centre around ideas residents may have in regards to an organics program. She says the city has found that a large amount of waste going to the landfill by multi-unit residents is compostable.
The city estimates the cost to close the current landfill will be $26 million and the cost to establish a new one will be $100 million so to extend the life of the landfill, the city needs to look for diversion ideas and develop a sustainable funding model.
