Genetic evidence allowed RCMP to determine Gary Srery was responsible for the deaths 14-year-old friends Eva Dvorak and Patsy McQueen in the winter of 1976 as well as the later deaths of 20-year old Melissa Rehorek and 19-year-old Barbara MacLean.

Srery was in his early thirties at the time of the homicides. After jumping bail on a rape charge in California, Srery illegally entered Canada in 1974 and lived in Calgary for four years before moving to the lower BC mainland. He was arrested in 1998 for a sexual assault in New Westminster and served five years in prison. Srery was then deported to the United States where he eventually died in an Idaho prison in 2011.

RCMP Inspector Breanne Brown is concerned that Srery was responsible for more violent crimes.

Srery used nine different aliases during his time in Canada, such as Rex Long and Willy Blackman.  He lived a transient lifestyle and would sometimes work as a cook.
