Two men have been arrested and charged for evading Saskatoon police early Thursday morning.
At 3:30 a.m., officers say they watched a suspicious vehicle with two occupants driving erratically in the area of 21st Street West and Avenue Y South. A traffic stop was attempted, but officers say the vehicle evaded police at a high rate of speed before colliding with city infrastructure in a nearby park a short distance later.
The driver was apprehended by a police service dog in the 200 block of Avenue Y South after he fled the scene. He sustained serious but non-life-threatening injuries as a result of contact with the police dog. The second man remained with the vehicle and was arrested without further incident.
Police say they believed both men were under the influence of an intoxicant at the time of their arrests, and they were transported to hospital for further evaluation.
The 32-year-old male driver was charged with evading police and dangerous driving. The 31-year-old male passenger has been charged with breaching court-imposed conditions. The investigation continues, and further charges could be laid. The Saskatchewan Serious Incident Response Team was requested to conduct an independent investigation into the circumstances of this incident by the Saskatoon Police Service.
