The President of CUMFI, or Central Urban Metis Federation Inc., is encouraging people of all walks of life to attend the 6th annual Metis Cultural Days, hosted at the Western Development Museum.
Shirley Isbister says the schedule is packed with events that showcase the Metis culture, history, and language, but also provide a space for people of all backgrounds to come together and enjoy themselves.
Activities include the annual Celebrity Neckbone Eating Contest with Police Chief Troy Cooper defending his title as champion. There is also face painting, skilled trapper events, learning the Michief language, a Fiddle Finale, Michief Bingo, a jigging competition, Metis and Ukrainian dances, and a free pancake breakfast on Sunday, the final day of the event. There will also be opportunities to eat traditional foods such as Bannock on a stick, and Metis cuisine from the CUMFI food truck.
This year’s theme is Year of Community, and Isbister hopes in the spirit of reconciliation, people of all cultures can come out, enjoy themselves at no cost, and realize that we are all the same.
