With camping season in full swing, Saskatchewan residents are being reminded to practice their animal safety skills regarding insects, wildlife encounters, and food safety.
Scouts Canada volunteer Graham Rice says a common misconception people have is that they should hide when they encounter an animal like a bear, cougar, or wolf. He says that animals are more reactive when they are surprised, so letting them know you are in the area could prevent a bad reaction. Rice also touches on campsite cooking. He says that campers should ensure that their area is clean and that any leftovers are disposed of either in a bear bin, hung in a tree, or at least 30 metres away from camp. He also reminds campers that insects can be dangerous too. Routine tick-checks should be done on yourself, children, and pets to prevent bites and possible disease.
Scouts Canada has launched a campers help line to assist people caught in a pinch without any helpful resources. Prerecorded messages will be available 24/7 on topics such as animals, water safety and first aid. The number is 1-844-SCOUT-101.
