The Federal Government has announced $37.5 million to fund programs and services across the country that attempt to reduce high rates of sexually transmitted and blood borne infections – also known as STBBIs – in First Nations and Inuit communities. Part of that money, over five years, will go to the “Know Your Status,” service to First Nations communities in Saskatchewan. The government says that the program has been very effective in increasing access to culturally grounded STBBI prevention, testing, follow up, and treatment. The government says reported rates of HIV and hepatitis C infection in Indigenous communities are significantly higher than in non-Indigenous populations.
