As summer fast approaches, CAA is providing cyclists with some tips and reminders about how to stay safe on the roads.
Lona Gervais, CAA Senior Communication Specialist, says one of the most important things to have is a properly fitted helmet.
“A helmet should sit flat on your head, and not tipped up. It should fit two fingers above your eyebrows. The straps form a V around and under your ears, and there should be a one-finger gap between your chin and the strap at the bottom,” Gervais explains.
She says before you begin your bike ride, you should check to make sure all its parts are functioning.
“We’re asking people to check their tires to make sure they’re properly inflated. Check your brakes. Check your handlebars to make sure they’re at the correct height. Check your chain to make sure it’s well oiled. Check your crank so that it’s running correctly.”
It is also important to choose a bike that suites your needs the best…
“You should choose the best bike for you. If you go to a professional, they can help you choose the correct size, frame, height, as well as (a bike that matches) the roads that you plan to drive on.”
Also, bicycles are considered, by law, a vehicle on the road, and cyclists must obey the rules of traffic accordingly. CAA has several instructional videos on their website depicting how cyclists can use their hands to signal to vehicles on the road.
