The City of Warman has moved on from relying on the federal and provincial government funding for the expansion of the Warman Home Centre Communiplex, formerly known as the Legends Centre.

Mayor Gary Philipchuk says when the funding didn’t come to fruition, Warman City Council asked Administration to scale back the project, keeping a second full-sized ice rink but removing other options like a lounge and extra storage space. However, how the project will be funded is still in question.

Philipchuk says they still have to come up with somewhere between $13 million to $14 million for the scaled back expansion. Council will be discussing a possible general Recreation Levy, which could start next year or in 2024, that would incrementally increase, landing at around $150 per property owner.

Warman’s Mayor says the rink would be the first priority for a levy, but it only serves a fraction of the community, so they also want to look at other opportunities for recreation like a turfed area for things like soccer, football and lacrosse and possibly a pool in the future.
