Connor Bedard from North Vancouver, BC who plays for the WHL’s Regina Pats became the youngest Canadian player to score four goals in a game at the IIHF World Junior Championship on Tuesday night joining the ranks of Mario Lemieux and Brayden Schenn. He is also the youngest to score a hat trick at the World Juniors beating Wayne Gretzky for the title. Gretzky did it at 16 years old in 1977.
Canada skated to an 11-2 rout of Austria and is now 2-0 at the tournament.
Two American players tested positive for COVID-19. That forced the U.S. to forfeit a Pool B game to Switzerland and the entire team is now in mandatory quarantine.
Under International Ice Hockey Federation rules, the Swiss team was awarded a 1-0 win. The IIHF has not yet decided if the U.S. can play Wednesday’s Pool B game against Sweden.
Canada plays its second Pool A game Wednesday against Germany.
