In a news release, Patrick De Haan, head of petroleum analysis at GasBuddy says the relief at the pumps including diesel in most provinces may be short lived. He suggests that the temporary suspension of the federal fuel excise tax may be quickly offset by surging oil prices.
De Haan points out, “Crude rallied sharply in Sunday night trading after Iran re-closed the Strait of Hormuz and President Trump signaled further escalation if Tehran does not come to an agreement.”
He says the continued global uncertainty could drive fuel prices up in the days ahead, eroding much- if not all- of the savings from the tax pause.
