There are rarely so many positives to take from a four-game winless streak. In the eyes of the Saskatoon Blades, they had checked off nearly every box for keys to a victory, except for the victory. The Bridge City Bunch outshot their opponent in three of the four contests and had opened the scoring in all four games coming into tonight. Yet, the Blue and Gold found themselves on the wrong side of a win. That changed tonight with a 4-3 win over the Calgary Hitmen, and not only snapping the winless drought but earning their first win on home ice since October 21st against Everett.

Konstantin Hutzinger (pictured) scored 1:16 into the game, making it five straight games where the Blades have opened the scoring. Hutzinger also snapped a six-game goalless and pointless drought while being elevated in the lineup with the absence of Kain Martinuk at the World Under-17 Hockey Championships, and Cooper Williams who missed tonight due to illness. Hunter Laing extended his four-game point streak to five with a goal 5:57 into the second period with David Lewandowski and Kazden Mathies grabbing helpers, and Mathies extending his point streak to 10 games, tailing 19 points in that frame with a second assist in the period off a Tyrone Sobry goal. Blake Vanek scored for Calgary in between to get the Hitmen on the board until Konstantin Hutzinger scored his second of the game at 15:46 of the second period giving the Blades a 4-1 lead. As they say, no lead is safe as Andrei Molgachev found the back of net at 17:16 of the second on one of his 9 shots of the game. A penalty late in the period against Calgary looked like it would give the Blades a chance to take a lead into the intermission, but recently named Player of the Month, 19-year-old Carter Sanderson scored a league leading fourth short-handed goal with 13 seconds remaining in the period, cutting the Blue and Gold’s lead to 4-3. With the goal, Sanderson also retakes the league lead in goals with 16.

Calgary outshot the Blades 19-7 in the third period as they pressed for a tying-goal, and 46-36 overall but 6’6 Czech import netminder Martin Psohlavec stood tall and made the saves he needed to, especially in the third period. Psohlavec earned his seventh win of the season as he turned aside 43 of 46 shots overall. The Bridge City Bunch now brace themselves for a quick turnaround tomorrow morning as the bus leaves for Brandon bright and early. Puck drop from Brandon tomorrow night is 5 p.m.  Following are the audio highlights from CJWW’s broadcast along with Post-Game Show conversations with acting head coach Andrew Sarauer, forwards Konstantin Hutzinger and Gavin Anderson, plus the official game summary courtesy the W-H-L website…..
