In a news release issued by Global Affairs Canada, the Canadian government announced how it was going to make sure that athletes from Russia and Belarus do not play in international sport in Canada.
The release said, “Canada’s position is unequivocal: as long as Russia continues its war of aggression against Ukraine, there can be no return to business as usual. Canada will continue to stand with Ukraine.”
As such the federal government says the Minister of Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship will exercise her authorities under the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act to individually assess and prevent athletes from Russia and Belarus and their officials from entering Canada to compete under their national symbols.
The government also says Canada will continue to require that events receiving Government of Canada funding prohibit the participation of Russian and Belarusian athletes under their national symbols.
