This is Vanese Ferguson with Coffee Talk. National Day for Truth and Reconciliation – or Orange Shirt Day – has taken nasty turn on at least one front. Denialism. Like when you hear people say things like there was no holocaust. That kind of denialism. Apparently even t-shirts have surfaced with denialism related messaging. I think its apalling. My mom remembers residential schools, I have friends in east central Saskatchewan who remember their parents telling them, when complaining about chores or rules, would rather be in a residential school like those other kids. I mean an entire collective of people did not make up these stories – on top of that, the Catholic Church and the Government Canada, the primary sources and funders for residential schools have it well documented. In late August,Rebel News announced it was selling clothing with terms such as: Still no proof; You can’t handle the truth; Buried Truth; Dig Deeper. They should be ashamed and we should be horrified. Standing up to your truth, owning it – i think is part of truth and reconciliation. I for one will be wearing my orange shirt this week.
