The United States President went to social media on Monday morning with a surprising post that he was working on a big deal to purchase potash from Belarus for a cheaper price than the Canadian product, which comes from Saskatchewan. It appears to be the latest salvo in the ongoing “trade war” between the United States and Canada. Canada supplies about 85 per cent of American farmers’ potash fertilizer requirements. The United States accounts for about half of Canadian annual sales so both countries are reliant on each other.
On Monday afternoon, Saskatchewan Premier Scott Moe issued this response.
