A photo of a 72-year-old man laying on the floor at Royal University Hospital is drawing plenty of response on social media.

Edward Guenther was on the floor for two hours earlier this month due to a shortage of beds. Guenther sought care on the evening of September 9th when he was found on the street after suffering a seizure. He was sent home in a cab early the next morning.

On September 13th, Guenther called his daughters, saying he could not be alone. They took him to RUH and the family said it took 14 hours to see a doctor. While waiting, a makeshift bed was made on the floor before he was moved to a stretcher in the hallway.

The NDP says this story comes soon after the death of Kirsten Hanke who died of complications arising from a broken ankle. Her surgery had been postponed due to short staffing at RUH.

An NDP news release contained a statement from Guenther’s daughter, Angela

“Since sharing my dad’s story on social media, I have heard from many other people who have shared difficult and heartbreaking healthcare experiences of their own. That deserves attention. We need to have serious conversations about what people are experiencing, why situations like these are happening, and what can be done to improve care. I am sharing this because my dad’s experience matters, but this is not only about my dad. It is also about the other patients and families who are struggling to get the care they need.
