This is Vanese Ferguson with Coffee Talk. Right about now I think I regard the new round of 50 per cent tariffs on nearly US$20 billion worth of Canadian goods ranging from dairy to down jackets set to take effect next Wednesday about the same way I regard road closures for construction season. Meh. Not that I don’t see the harmful impact those kinds of tariffs have but at the end of the day, we don’t have any influence, really, on anything. We can choose not to buy American produce or booze or not travel to the U.S. and while that might be satisfying, it will in no way stop Trump and company from executing their next move, if it’s actually even planned versus a one-off whim of the day. As far as road closures this weekend, other than Wanuskewin which I’m sure is giving everyone who uses it fits – the impactful road closures this weekend includes Vic Boulevard and Hunter Road roundabout which are closed for paving and westbound lanes of 33rd – by the Co-op – both on Saturday. I have to say though, I was on Vancouver Island last week and if you want to exercise patience head out of Victoria where it is down to one lane at times on the highway due to construction and it is literally a bumper-to-bumper parking lot. I’m just looking forward to University Bridge finally re opening. As for the tariffs. Keep your fingers crossed. Maybe an 11th hour change of mind is in the offing.
