It was a steamy, but satisfying Saturday for the Saskatoon Berries, as they swept a doubleheader from Swift Current at Cairns Field.
On a day when the temperature hit 32 degrees, but felt like 39 with the humidity, Saskatoon won by scores of 7-0 and 13-7. That gives the Berries three straight wins over the 57s and upped Saskatoon’s record to 24-11 – the same as Moose Jaw and tied for first place in the East Division of the W-C-B-L. A total of almost 3,800 fans saw the Berries shutout Swift Current, now 11-21 for the season, on just two hits in the first contest with Muenster product Merek Yeager and Saskatoon native Colin Plain each allowing just one hit over four and three innings, respectively, in what was the 100th win in Berries’ franchise history. In the nightcap, Saskatoon overcame a pair of first inning home runs by the 57s before scoring four runs in each of the first two frames and cruising to the win. Texan Wesley Shackelford, registered the pitching win in his second relief appearance for the Berries and got major offensive support from Josh Henson, Mason Roell and Gael Salinas who drove in three, three and two runs, respectively. Roell went deep for his first home run since returning to Saskatoon. The Berries and 57s will play a fourth consecutive game against one another, in just three days, on Sunday at Saskatoon with first pitch at 1 o’clock. One other satisfying thing from a Berries’ franchise perspective was that outfielder Carter Beck was drafted in the first round of the Major League Baseball Draft Saturday, 26th overall, by the Atlanta Braves. A Carnduff product, Beck played the first two seasons with Saskatoon and is the first Berries’ player chosen. He is, also, the highest-selected Saskatchewan native in M-L-B draft history. Following are Les Lazaruk’s post-game conversations with head coach Joe Carnahan, Yeager and Shackelford – plus scoreboard pictures…..
