On Friday Saskatoon presented three new sculptures inspired by large glacier-deposited rocks called erratics.
Collectively the sculptures are called “Modern Erratics” and are each at separate locations. One sculpture is at the Forestry Farm Park, one is at Diefenbaker Park, and the largest one is at the Material Recovery Centre.
The art is made by the internationally recognized and Calgary-based artist duo Sans façon. The duo was selected through a juried process by the City’s Public Art Advisory Committee.
The creation of the art installation led to the processing of over 45 hundred kilograms of plastic collected from Saskatchewan and the broader Prairie region.
The sculptures were developed through consultation with Indigenous advisors, sustainability professionals, as well as land and heritage experts. The art is intended to explore material reuse, environmental responsibility and the realities of modern recycling systems.
The art installation was commissioned through Saskatoon’s Percent for Art Program, and funding was provided through the 2022 Material Recovery Centre project budget.
