A recent survey conducted by Leger on behalf of United Way Centraide suggests that more Canadians are suffering from financial hardships and anxiety.
The organization spoke with over 8000 Canadians earlier this year, and found that 40 per cent report difficulty sleeping due to financial stress and 27 per cent say their situation has worsened over the last six months
According to the poll, people are feeling the pinch when it comes to the purchase of everyday basics, such as food, gas, rent, and utilities.
United Way Saskatoon CEO Sheri Benson says those who are being hit the hardest are single parents, newcomers, and young people age 18-34.
“Those early years, you need to be learning, eating properly, in a good place to live, and all those things…We have a group pf young people that are struggling.”
Benson brings a local perspective to the table, stating that, “Nearly half of Saskatchewan households are one month away from some kind of financial crisis. That means many in our community, almost half, are living with a lot of anxiety.”
She adds that in order to maintain their housing, many people are choosing to cut down the quality and quantity of the food they eat, as well as which activities they take part in.
However, on the bright side, 40 per cent of those who accessed community organization support said it made a positive impact on their situation.
She says the key lies in the partnerships between community organizations, all levels of government, and the generosity of local donors.
