Let’s get together for coffee. Want to go for coffee? It’s time for a coffee break. There’s a recurring theme there, coffee. Coffee lovers want that steaming cup of java soon after popping (or struggling) out of bed in the morning. Some drink multiple cups of coffee daily. Three or four cups a day they say is OK for most adults but some drink more, some drink less. I usually drink one cup per day in the morning, sometimes two. Since 1997…..wow, has it been that long? I’ve been doing these Coffeetalks and called them that because chatting and drinking coffee have always gone hand in hand (I’m not sure if being alone and talking to yourself counts). In August of 2002, 23 years ago, I talked about the origin of coffee. It is said to most likely have been discovered in Ethiopia around 850 AD when a goat herder found that his goats became energetic after eating berries from a specific tree. So, what the heck, he tried some of the berries himself and experienced the same effect. Legend has it that he took some of these berries to a monastery where the Abbot flung the fruit into a fire from whence a wonderful aroma ensued. The Abbot doused the fire and immersed the charred fruit in water that then changed colour, so he drank some and became somewhat invigorated so he told all the other monks to drink the stuff. This may be a bit of a myth but apparently monks did experiment with roasting and brewing the berries leading to the first use of coffee as a beverage. So, there we go.
