The Sask. Party Government has responded to the Opposition’s call for action to pass its “Keep Saskatchewan in Canada” Act.

Party Leader Carla Beck introduced the bill in the Legislature last week.

The Sask. Party says with this bill, “The NDP wants to take the voice away from hundreds of thousands of Saskatchewan people by doubling the number of voters needed to cause a citizen-initiated referendum on separation.”

A written release from the party goes on to say that the number of signatures needed is currently about 125,000, and the new NDP legislation would double it to 250,000, which happens to be more than the number of people who voted for the provincial NDP in any election since 1991.

The statement concludes that the Sask. Party government is not looking to hold a referendum, but it will also not be silencing the voice of Saskatchewan people that would like one.
