One-hundred-and-ten graduating high school students from over 70 Saskatchewan communities have been awarded with $1000 Saskatchewan Youth Apprenticeship (SYA) Industry Scholarships.
These students plan on pursuing a career in the skilled trades. To complete SYA, the students worked through 12 challenges, which included interviewing a journeyperson, researching and writing a report on a designated trade, and outlining the steps to journeyperson certification.
All students who complete SYA and register as apprentices in Saskatchewan within five years receive significant benefits: 300 trade hours, plus the waiver of their apprenticeship registration fee and Level 1 technical training tuition.
The chosen winners were nominated and then selected based on their responses in the nomination form. Students were asked to outline how SYA has benefitted them, their current experiences with the skilled trades, and their education and career plans following graduation.
